Mascot Installation

These pages will guide you through some simple system checks before configuring the Mascot protein identification system. Please follow all of the steps in order. The whole procedure should only take a few minutes.

Step 1: Web Server Operation

If the field above reports "Web server functioning correctly for documents", proceed to step 2.

If the field above reports "Problem: this document is being read from disk", then your browser is reading this document direct from disk. You must open the document as a URL on your local web server

If the field above reports "Problem: browser does not support JavaScript", please install a JavaScript aware browser now. The following links may be useful:

Step 2: Perl

The next step is to test the local Perl installation. If you get an error message, or a "File Save As..." dialog box, then Perl is not functioning correctly. This must be corrected before proceeding. Possible reasons for the problem are:

  • Perl is not installed, or was installed incorrectly. Binary and source distributions of Perl can be downloaded by following this link.
  • The Perl scripts expect to find Perl at /usr/local/bin/perl. If Perl is installed in a different path, create a link as follows:
    ln -s /path/to/your/perl /usr/local/bin/perl.
  • The Mascot archive has been unpacked into the wrong path
  • The directory to URL mappings are not correct.
  • The mascot/cgi directory is not configured for CGI execution.
  • This is not a JavaScript aware web browser.
